Beyond their size, small businesses are defined by their spirit. And at the helm are their intrepid founders—scrappy, ambitious, and resilient. They invent and build things despite uncertainty, because it’s what drives them. Their risks lead to innovation that moves the world forward. And we need them.
Came here on a Saturday evening at 7:30 and there was plenty of parking available. The restaurant is rather quaint so it's personable but great atmosphere for dates, family occasion, or even business. Server was attentive and food came out relatively fast. We ordered crispy rice for the appetizer and it was absolutely delicious except for the fact that the rice was a bit thick so it was harder to eat. Maybe if it was on the flatter side, it would have been more enjoyable. We got soft shell roll and also a variety of nigiri. The fish for the nigiri was fresh and the rice to fish ratio wasn't bad. The roll was alright. Nothing to rave about. Overall experience here was pleasant and I would come back again if I'm in the area.
Everything was very good except the portion size of the fish slices for the sushi and sashimi is way too thin/small. Quality is there but the serving size is way too small
Great elevated sushi and small dishes, not a typical neighborhood sushi joint but very much a locals spot. Try their specials. Awesome tempura.
I stopped by Kakurega in Costa Mesa and had the salmon skin salad and miso soup. While both are simple dishes, the salad really stood out — it was beautifully presented with delicate daikon radish sprouts and perfectly cut slivers of crispy salmon skin, each with a small piece of salmon meat attached. You could tell it was made with care and precision. I also tried two different sake flights, and the experience was a highlight of the evening. Rich, the host, guided me through each selection with such enthusiasm and knowledge — it made the tasting both fun and informative. They also have Denshu in stock, which ended up being my favorite. The atmosphere is intimate and stylish — perfect for a date night or an evening out with friends. Between the thoughtful food, exceptional service, and relaxed vibe, Kakurega is definitely a hidden gem in Costa Mesa.
What a hidden gem! I've been here twice now, and both visits have left me genuinely impressed. My most recent trip was on a Friday evening: we were seated immediately at one of the open tables, and our server whisked away our drink orders and returned with them in no time. To start, we shared garlic edamame and tempura. For mains, I chose the Three Kings Cut Roll and a spicy tuna handroll, while my friend went with the Three Kings Roll II and the Lollipop Roll. We also both enjoyed a comforting bowl of miso soup. Our waiter was gracious and attentive as he patiently answered all our questions and timed each course to perfection. Every bite was delicious: crisp vegetables, fresh fish, and rolls that melted in your mouth. As sushi aficionados, my friend and I agree this ranks among the best sushi we've found in the area. Although the restaurant was fairly busy, the interior remained quiet, and the dim lighting created a peaceful, inviting ambience. With its exceptional quality and unbeatable prices, this spot has definitely earned its place on my go-to list.
